ECS Claims World’s Smallest PC

ECS of Taiwan was showing its media player range which uses the Intel Apollo Lake processors and is now in mass production. At the end of this month, a new OPS module will become available that uses Intel’s ‘Kaby Lake’ technology (an upgrade on Skylake) with a range of Core i5 and i7 CPUs available as well as an option of AMD CPUs. The company also told us that it would have an Intel SDM (Smart Display Module) by the end of August. SDM is a PCIe-based architecture that can fit into slim systems as it is just 20 mm thick (without a case) and just 60mm x 100mm. The company told us that it expects the SDM to be used in IoT applications as well as in digital signage.

The company had a very, very small system unit on show, the ‘Nanocube’ which is claimed to be ‘the world’s smallest PC’ and which supports UltraHD output via HDMI. It includes a very small fan for cooling and can be VESA mounted. It is based on Intel Apollo Lake CPUs and has up to 4GB of memory. Graphics output is via HDMI and the box is 70 x 70 x 31.4mm in size. The box needs a 2A/12V PSU and runs Windows 10 Home.
