Dropping Demand Pushes Down India’s PC Market by 30.1% YoY in Q1’23

PC shipments in India dropped by 30.1% compared to the same period in the previous year, with only 2.99 million units shipped. Among the PC types, notebooks experienced the largest drop, with a 40.8% year-on-year (YoY) decline, while desktops saw positive demand.

The market can be divided into two segments: consumer and commercial. The consumer segment, which includes individual buyers, declined by 36.1% YoY due to reduced demand and low market sentiment. The commercial segment, which includes business purchases, declined by 25.1% YoY due to delayed or reduced procurement by businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The only sectors that saw growth were government and education. The government sector grew by 25.2% YoY thanks to increased procurement from government bodies. The education sector grew by a significant 65.6% YoY, largely because of the fulfillment of an order in Gujrat.

Premium notebooks, those costing more than $1000, faced a particularly steep decline. Shipments fell by 65.8% YoY in the commercial segment and 59% in the consumer segment due to inventory correction of Apple MacBooks and low demand from businesses. As a result, online sales also declined by 42.4% YoY.

According to Bharath Shenoy, a senior market analyst at IDC India, high inventory levels have caused vendors to focus on clearing old stock, causing a further drop in shipments. However, he anticipates a recovery starting from June-July, driven by back-to-college demand and aggressive online sales during the festive months.

The top 5 companies in the PC market in Q1’23 were HP, Lenovo, Dell, Acer, and Asus. Despite leading the market, HP’s share declined by 30.2% YoY. Lenovo, in second place, struggled with government orders, resulting in a 37.5% YoY decline. Dell’s focus on inventory correction led to a large drop in market share, while Acer, despite the market downturn, managed to do well, especially in the government and education sectors. ASUS continued to perform well in the consumer segment, holding second place in the consumer notebook category.
