Dell Starts to Take Orders for 8K Monitor

Dell has started to take pre-orders for the UP3218K 8K monitor that it showed at the recent CES show. (Dell 8K Monitor Available Soon) The price has been confirmed at $5,000 and it will ship from April 18th (although when we looked, deliveries for new orders had shipped to 1st May).

Specifications are basically as detailed at CES (400 cd/m²/1300:1/5ms/IPS) and Dell said that the monitor is shipped with a colour accuracy of delta-E less than two and the monitor can be used with a calibrator. Colour gamuts are good at 100% of sRGB/Rec.709 and AdobeRGB and 98% of DCI-P3.

At CES, although the resolution was very attractive to a pixelaholic like me, the demonstrations clearly showed the problems of menu sizes etc unless the apps and operating systems are optimised. Of course, even if you have this monitor, you need to drive it and at MWC, VESA showed the monitor running over a single DisplayPort cable and using version 1.4 with HBR3. It was only running at 30fps as development was not quite finished, but, eventually, the monitor will be able to run from a single cable. However, at the moment, users will need to be sure that their graphics systems are capable of driving the monitor, that is to say, dual 3840 x 4320 displays.
