What They Say
Darwin Precisions told Digitimes that it is planning a $33.9 million investment in new production capacity in Xiamen, China for backlights. There will be two new production lines with a combined capacity of 300K modules per month and should be active by the end of the year. It will make high end notebook and monitor BLUs as well as automotive backlights.
The company is also developing FMM technology with an aim to supply LGD, SDC and Chinese OLED makers. The firm’s plan is that FMM will become the biggest source of revenue in the future.
Digitimes reported that although the firm made a loss in 2021, it made profit in Q1 2022 ($0.47 million) and has revenues of $287 million for the first half of 2022, down 8.85% on last year.
What We Think
It’s not easy for a Taiwanese company to dislodge incumbents in the FMM business. The firm must be confident that it has compelling technology or costs. (BR)
