Manufacturers in China are reportedly planning to launch Mini LED-backlit smartphones, in response to the growing shortage of OLED panels, according to unnamed supply chain sources.
Huawei and Xiaomi have been named as two of the vendors planning to work with Taiwanese Mini LED manufacturers to create smartphone backlight modules during the second quarter of 2018.
Mini LED provides better brightness, colour and contrast than standard LEDs. Last month, AU Optronics announced its intentions to adopt Mini LED backlighting in its products this year. (AU Optronics Will Adopt Mini LED Backlighting in 2018)

This is also a trend in TV and Samsung privately showed a TV with around 10,000 LED zones in its backlight. Of course, that was in a direct LCD, rather than an edge-lit panel as would be used in a phone. (BR)
