Canon was showing a projection-based HDR demo at NAB that was not too bad, in my view. The projector was their 4K501ST that was modified to cover the full DCI-P3 color gamut. Content was projected on a 130” screen so that the luminance came in at the DCI recommendation of 14 fL or 48 cd/m². Contrast was 2230:1. The content clearly showed highlights that were bright with a nice dynamic range, even though the contrast spec suggested it would not be that good.
Canon is aiming this at post houses and screening rooms although it is not DCI compliant. It is available now on special order. – CC
