Canal+ stays on French DTT

What They Say

The CSA broadcast regulator in France has granted a licence to Canal+ to continue to provide DTT services for three years. Canal+ was the only applicant for the slot. The broadcaster said in a statement that it believes that less than 5% of its French subscribers use DTT.

What We Think

On the face of it, this story was not really that interesting, but then I saw that the licence was originally offered for ten years. Canal+ asked that this was reduced to just three years because of the rapid evolution of the broadcast landscape. The speed of market development has been really difficult for broadcasters who, historically, have evolved much more slowly. This move really highlights how IP delivery of video is really happening very fast now. Canal+ has found itself under pressure in recent years from Netflix and others and shed 500 staff (18%) in 2019. (BR)
