Apple Delays Production of MicroLED Apple Watch; Reduction in Mixed Reality Vision Pro Production Targets

Apple’s transition to MicroLED technology for its Apple Watch has been delayed from Q2’25 to Q1’26, according to market research firm TrendForce. Earlier this year, reports suggested that Apple could begin using MicroLED as early as 2024, but insiders predicted this timeline was too optimistic due to high manufacturing costs and technology issues.

Back in January of this year, DSCC confirmed LG Display would begin production of MicroLED displays starting in the second half of 2024, giving it enough time to produce panels for Apple to release a MicroLED Apple Watch in 2025, not the 2024 window that had previously been suggested.

This comes hot on the heels of reports that production targets for Apple’s Vision Pro have been reduced. The Financial Times reported that due to its complex design, Apple has lowered its first-year production targets from one million units to fewer than 400,000. The yield of the Vision Pro’s key component, OLEDoS (OLED on silicon) is reportedly low. The OLEDoS for the Vision Pro are supplied by Sony, whose annual production capacity for OLEDoS is estimated at 900,000 units, with previous annual production volumes ranging between 100,000 to 200,000 units per quarter.
