Due to potential burn and fire hazards, HP is expanding its recall of laptop batteries for notebooks under its brand of Compaq. A statement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission says HP will recall an additional 101,000 batteries having already recalled 41,000 batteries last year.
The recall involves lithium-ion batteries found in HP notebooks shipped between March 2013 and October 2016. The batteries concerned are from notebook computers including HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion. Although, according to an HP spokesperson, less than 1% of all HP notebooks sold during this time contain the affected battery. Users are asked stop using the batteries and to contact HP for immediate replacement of their batteries.
Other devices carrying lithium-ion batteries have experienced similar issues with overheating, most notable of these is the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, which has now been withdrawn from sale.
