A Very Interesting OLED Development

What They Say

Display Daily today has an article about a new development that was reported recently by Nature. It highlights how UDC has researched plasmonic enhancement of OLEDs to extend OLED lifetime and improve light extraction.

What We Think

When I saw this article (I previously posted a link on WBS), I asked Arthur to write it up as he does a very good job with this kind of complex science. The development has the potential to very significantly extend the lifetime of OLEDs as well as improving the brightness. The article claims to achieve a three fold increase in stability.

It may also be able to used to boost the brightness further if some of the lifetime advantage is given up as OLED tends to degrade quicker at higher brightness up to now. Although the noise about OLED lifetime and burn-in in the TV market may have declined a little, it remains true, as far as I am aware, that TV makers are not yet prepared to warranty their TVs from burn-in, which can’t help to maximise sales.

UDC used to be quite open to talking about future technologies, these days it has a market capitalisation of $9.5 billion and that has made it very cautious, understandably, about future developments. (BR)
