Digital Europe Unveils New UHD Logo

Digital Europe used IFA 2014 to release a new Ultra HD logo which it says will help consumers differentiate it from the earlier HD standard.

In order to use the logo, a device has to meet the following requirements:

* 3840 x 2160 resolution in 16:9 aspect ratio

* Meet the Rec. 709 standard

* Shall have at least one end-to-end signal path available to the user that does not render a UHD input at a frame rate or resolution lower than that received over the UHD interface from the source

* 8-bit colour

* Support input of 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps (UltraHD content over HDMI will also be supported at these frame rates)

* PCM 2.0 stereo audio

The Ultra HD label will inform consumers that the display device they are considering buying is compatible with all major sources of Ultra HD content and that it will be able to display this content in Ultra HD format. Participation in the logo programme is open to any manufacturer provided that they sign the licence agreement and commit themselves to the high quality and interoperability requirements defined by Digital Europe. For the industry, Digital Europe says that the Ultra HD Display parameters will help media player and receiver manufacturers understand how their content is rendered on a baseline Ultra HD Display.

50P and 60P can be supported by the use of 4:2:0 video, while at lower frame rates, 4:2:2 are required, which is essential to support current HDMI. See the editorial in this issue for more comments. (BR)
