What They Say
Intel is rumoured to be planning to bring ray tracing to its integrated graphics processors in the Intel Meteor Lake processors that are due in 2023. Wccftech.com said that technically the GPU is likely to be tiled with the CPU rather than integrated on the same chip.
What We Think
I confess that I got caught up a bit in the hype when Nvidia plugged its ray tracing at Siggraph in 2019. As Jon Peddie pointed out, when he is zapping enemies in his games, he doesn’t look for long at the quality of the graphics and many gamers are, like him, interested in action. There are some that like a slower paced level of gaming where the image quality does make a difference, but I suspect a) they may be in a minority and b) they may be less willing to spend real money on their gaming systems.
I think Jon would classify integrated as non-integrated more on whether the CPU and GPU share memory, rather than on the physical chip. (BR)
