Industry sources have indicated to Digitimes that falling prices of LCD TV panels could lead to production cuts. They highlighted, for instance, that many companies have cut the price of their 32″ open cell panels below $50, including China Star Optoelectronics and Samsung Display.
Meanwhile, a ‘Taiwan panel-maker’ reportedly cut the price of its LCD panels as low as $40, to encourage China-based TV manufacturers to buy — 500,000 of these panels are believed to have been sold.
Prices are still above cash cost for now, but Digitimes’ sources believe that they may fall below cost price before too long, which could trigger production cuts in the third or fourth quarter of 2018, in order to mitigate financial losses.
