Mim is a Honk Kong based company that announced a smartwatch with the world’s first ‘Transparent Levitation Display’. As it turns out, the fancy name refers to a transparent display and it appears to be a transparent LCD. Combine this with a smartwatch and new name for the display and you have the Mim X.
The company has just opened a Kickstarter campaign and since it already achieved its very moderate goal, there is a very good chance that we will be able to buy this watch in the not so far future. If you hurry, you may still be able to get one at a discount price on Kickstarter.
The image shows a stylish mechanical watch with a transparent LCD that acts as the output for the smartwatch functions included in the watch. From videos they have published, the display seems to be a bit more bluish with less contrast than is shown in the published images.
The smartwatch functionality includes messaging, calls, email, WhatsApp, Wechat, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook message. It also includes more normal functions like dual time zones, alarm, heart rate monitor, and a fitness tracker. All this is, of course, provided from your mobile device via bluetooth.
The device also comes with wireless charging as shown below. Mim claims that the watch will run for 7-10 days on a full charge, which depends on the actual usage of the various functions.

The overall design is very nice, but the display term ‘Transparent Flotation Display’ or TLD seems more like marketing idea than anything new in the display world. Yes, the display is round and transparent, but that seems to be all there is. The description does not go into more detailed display specs like resolution, contrast ratio, etc. All in all, a nice device but not earth shatteringly new. (NH)
