Movies Anywhere has been launched in the US. The service lets users store all digital movie purchases in one unified app that works across retailers and platforms, including Disney, Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal, Warner Bros, Amazon Video, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.
The service lets users continue to purchase movies from online movie stores, but now to also browse around for the best price. Five of the six major Hollywood studios have committed to the project and these include Disney (including Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm), 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Universal and Warner Bros. Paramount and Lionsgate are not yet on board.
At launch, Movies Anywhere offers a library of 7,300 movies, including catalogue titles and new releases. The app works across a number of platforms, including Amazon Fire devices, Android devices and Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, Roku devices, and popular browsers.
Users can receive up to five digital movies when signing up to Movies Anywhere. It requires that the account is activated and linked to at least two participating retailers; Amazon, Google Play, iTunes or Vudu.
Movies Anywhere is owned by Disney but operates as an independent entity. It will also replace the existing Disney Movies Anywhere service.
Analyst Comment
The system will allow users to access content from their UltraViolet accounts, unless, of course, they movies are from Paramount and Lionsgate. (BR)
