LG and SES Show UHD High Frame Rate Technology

LG & SES showed HFR video in a collaboration at the annual SES Industry Days. The 4K HFR content was transmitted live via an ASTRA satellite at 19.2 degrees East and displayed on LG’s OLED TV, using prototype HFR software that can support operation up to 120Hz.

OLED has always had a challenge with high resolution and high frame rate, as the panels need compensation, which needs downloading to the panel when the image is not on the screen. The more frames and the more resolution, the less time available for the downloads. For volume production, the sets also need processors that can support a very high memory bandwidth and these are not yet available, yet, as far as I am aware and this is one of the key reasons that nobody is rushing to show HFR.

I had the chance to see the 100Hz demos by LG and the EBU at last year’s IFA and IBC and I was impressed.

Of course, SES will be keen on HFR as it means an increase in the bandwidth needed for transmission and anything that needs more bandwidth is good for satellite. The bandwidth for 100 Hz is nowhere near double that needed for 50Hz, because of the smaller changes between frames. I have heard estimates of a 20% increase. (BR)
