Inview of the UK announced that Nigeria has launched a new digital TV service in Abuja. The service is called ‘Free TV’ and is being developed in partnership with Nigeria’s National Broadcasting Commission. The potential audience is 20 million homes and 150 million individuals. This launch was the second phase of the roll-out. Inview’s software is running the STBs used to support the service and which are available at $7, with an annual licence fee of $5, rather than a monthly fee. There will be an optional pay TV service. The content is encrypted to try to stop theft of content by ‘DVD pirates’.
