The Korea Herald reported from a display seminar in Korea that Park Won-sang of Samsung Display quoted data from ABI Research that forecasts a growth in smartphone-based VR units from 4 million in 2013 to 66 million units next year. Park identified that power consumption is a big issue and he found that while hunting Pokemon, his phone lasted only two hours because of the combination of the GPS, camera and bright display all being used, so power consumption is a big factor in Samsung Display’s development. Samsung is also working on improving the visual comfort of VR displays.
The paper also quoted an LG engineer as saying that LG might be five years behind Samsung in developing panels for VR.
