Digitimes of Taiwan reports that Global Lighting Technologies (GLT), the backlight maker, expects to supply Sony with three million light guide plates (LGPs) for TV use this year and will become its largest client. The total supplied by GLT this year will be around 10 million, most of them at 50″ or above. 70% of the company’s products are used in slim TVs and this will rise to 80% in H2. The company also made 4.2 million illuminated keyboards in the first half of 2016, with a further 4 million expected in the second half.
GLT was due to finish construction on its fifth manufacturing facility in the Science Park in Tongluo, Taiwan, this month. The new factory can support five production lines which will be fully automated and can be made up to 80″ diagonal. The company is targeting global market share of lightguides for edge-lit displays to 15% – 20% once it has the new capacity.
