Peter Lyhne Uhrenholt is from Triax and he spoke about LNBs that can directly support SAT>IP.
Triax is from Denmark and has been around for more than 65 years. Most of its business is done in Europe, although there are sales in Asia and North America.
Triax believes there are 142 million DTH households in EMEA, with 152 million by 2018. These households want an OTT and multi-device experience.
SAT>IP is a simple and high bandwidth way to meet that need and avoids the need for extra cabling.
Triax has a new SAT>IP LNB which runs Linux and is powered over ethernet with power consumption of less than 7.5W. The LNB has an auto-tune facility and the LNB can support up to 8 simultaneous users with different streams from different transponders. The bandwidth is 900Mbps and the LNB can support UltraHD.
In a standard configuration, the LNB goes to a POE ethernet switch and then to a server. That would support free to air (FTA) channels, but if you need CAS or DRM, there might need to be an STB in the network. However, if CAS or DRM could be put into the LNB, then all channels could just be distributed on the home network.
In the longer term, a good solution may mean having a dedicated server with DRM, transcoding and encryption before sending the content to the other devices on the network.
Challenges that remain are in DRMs and transcoding.
Uhrenholt said that Triax is ready and is now looking for a broadcaster/operator project to roll out SAT>IP
