What They Say
After Meta’s earnings call, there have been lots of reports about the firm’s XR plans, with an emphasis on the Project Cambria headset. There was also interest because it builds on comments from CTO John Carmack last year that it will be focused on workplace use.
In a Facebook post Mark Zuckerberg said that the aim is to eventually replace the monitors and notebooks that are currently used for work. (internal descriptions include ‘laptop for the face’ and ‘Chromebook for the face’) He said that the Cambria would have better ergonomics and ‘full colour passthrough’ and will have built-in eye and face tracking.
Other leaks have suggested that Project Cambria could be in the market by September of this year and that it could cost $800 and will have 2Kx2K displays for each eye and will be based on Android.
Separately, The Information reported that there is an internal roadmap at Meta Platforms that shows four VR headsets between now and 2024. The blog said that Meta originally planned Project Cambria to be available by now, but it was delayed by Covid and supply chain issues. A second version is planned for 2024. There will be Funston, Stunson, and Cardiff projects as well as Cambria.
What We Think
Count me as sceptical as to whether anybody wants to spend all day with a ‘notebook on their face’! (BR)
