There was a rise in global revenue for industrial semiconductors to $43.5 billion in 2016, up 3.8% YoY, according to IHS Markit. Demand came from most sectors, including digital signage and LED lighting. The US continued to spend, while more favourable economic conditions in Europe, coupled with buying in emerging countries such as China, India and Brazil, led to growth.
The LED segment is forecast to grow from $9.4 billion in 2016 to $14.3 billion in 2021, driven by LED lighting.
Texas Instruments was the top semiconductor supplier, followed by Intel, STMicroelectronics, Infineon, Analog Devices, Toshiba and On Semiconductor. But there were also some new players rising in the rankings. The Microchip Technology/Atmel merger brought it up to 10th, while China’s investment in LED manufacturing saw its MLS enter the top 20. IHS expects more mergers and acquisitions this year, which would affect next year’s rankings.
