Vimmi is an Israeli company that was in the country area and is a supplier of OTT video services. The company has 200 ‘microservices’ that it can supply to support those wanting to establish OTT TV services. The company can offer ‘end to end’ content management or delivery, or can select from its range to fit existing infrastructure. It has around 140 staff.
The company claims that its approach offers much lower latency than some other companies such as Akamai. It believes it is better than others in keeping bit rates down and avoiding shifts between different bit rates in adaptive streaming situations, as users don’t like these changes. It also has better stability if there are problems with sessions being interrupted.
Vimmi can put servers close to the user and can get latency down to less than two seconds, much lower than others. The company told us that some cable and and dish suppliers have latency of 30 seconds to 50 seconds. High latency is a real problem in multi-channel setups and Vimmi can keep all users within two frames of each other – a big feature in multi-device installations where different timing on different displays can be especially frustrating.
It can also support large scale and has three operators using its technology that each has more than 40 million subscribers. It has customers across Asia in Thailand, Singapore and India and is establishing new offices in the US.
Echoing the comments we heard from service providers at IBC in 2016, the firm can roll out services very quickly, from 60 days, depending on the complexity of integration into existing infrastructure. The firm also told us that it was the first company to be able to support video streaming that was optimised for 18.5:9 displays. It can support services such as advert injection, user profiling, analytics and campaign management. The policy is to supply ‘only the services you can fix in-house’.
