UniVet Developing AR Safety Glasses

UniVet Optical Technologies is a maker of safety glasses from Brescia in Italy and has integrated VR technoology into the glasses which it has been developing for 20 years. The company is a Sony partner and has included a waveguide-based AR display in its glasses as a new initiative and the company has integrated a capacitive touch panel that can work via an I2C interface and USB. The company can supply a range of sensors and cameras as options on the glasses.

The design has been optimised to allow the glasses to be detached from the display device, so that the glasses themselves can be personal items for workers, while the higher cost display can be moved from person to person, for example in industrial operations with multiple shifts.

The glasses are run from a dedicated processor box and the system can run either Android or Linux. The company is planning to bring the new safety glasses to market at the end of 2018 and the company has made 200 systems for piloting applications. These early samples are available for around $2,500.
