UHD Dominating UK TV Market Value

Nick Simon of GfK spoke at a recent UltraHD conference held by SES in London and said that UltraHD sets are now the dominant HD TV type, especially in the over £350 price bracket. ($370 + tax) and in the size classes above 44″. He pointed to low consumer confidence in the UK , but there is still enthusiasm for new sets in the UK. UltraHD sets are accounting for two thirds of all the value in the UK market.

The level of pricing has not been falling as fast as in the past. In 2016, the proportion of models that had seen price cuts of 40% or more amounted to 21.3%, while this year the proportion showing price cuts of 40% of more is only 0.2%.

The shift to consumption on mobile devices is strong for young viewers. Among 18-34 year olds, only 49% prefer the TV as the device to use to watch TV.

Simon said that UltraHD Blu-ray players are growing in sales – the only category of optical that is growing.
