TriLite and Dispelix to create AR glasses projection display

What They Say

Trilite of Austria has combined with Dispelix of Finland to optimise the Trilite laser beam scanning (LBS) projector with the Dispelix waveguide. The Trixel 3 projector is said to be the smallest LBS device in the world at less than 1cm³ and weight of <1.5 gms. The use of an LBS avoids the need for relay optics between the projector and the waveguide.

What We Think

The Trixel scanner uses a MEMs device. Waveguides are an interesting technology item. As pointed out by Meta in its keynote (What Displays Have to Do to Bring AR Superpowers), the logic is that waveguide-based technology is the optimum solution for AR. However the number of suppliers has reduced after recent acquisitions. At Display Week, Vuzix explained how it is shifting its focus away from making headsets to developing waveguide technology and manufacturing. It got into the waveguide business to be able to get the components it needed, but the margin opportunities are much better now on those components than on the headsets themselves. (BR)
