Lenovo Lavie HZ550Tucked away in a corner was a new notebook – the LaVie Z HZ550 – rated as the world’s lightest. The notebook is made from magnesium-lithium, a much lighter material than aluminium (50% lighter) or magnesium alone. The notebook was created by Lenovo’s partner, NEC, in Japan, but will be sold by Lenovo around the world. Weight is just 777gms (the Macbook Air is 1.3 Kg) although the notebook uses a Core i5 processor and has a 13″ display of 2560 x 1440 resolution. There is also a hybrid version that goes up to a Core i7 that weighs 900 gms. Pricing will start at $1,299.

At the other end of the scale, Lenovo announced the W550S workstation notebook at the beginning of December. The 15″ display has options up from FullHD up to 2880 x 1620 with IPS and 350 cd/m² of brightness. It has an Nvidia K620M Maxwell graphics processor and still manages to get weight below 5lb (5.47lb with touch).
