In mid-October, Tobii revealed a new eye tracking platform and a set of components for eye tracking technology in consumer devices. These products – the Tobii IS4 platform and EyeChip components – can be used in PCs, tablets, cars, VR headsets and more.
The IS4 tracking module is powered by Tobii EyeChip. It utilises near-IR sensors, illuminators and Tobii EyeCore algorithms, as well as the company’s own middleware engine and SDK. It is the first Tobii device to meet integration requirements for consumer devices, such as low power consumption and the flexibility to be used with multiple system configurations.
Tobii EyeChip is an ASIC for eye tracking. It features hardware acceleration and vectorised processing, performing the on-chip processing of the EyeCore algorithms. Sensor and illumination control is also integrated. Tobii writes that the system provides ‘unbeatable’ eye tracking, while also reducing CPU load, bus load and power consumption compared to other eye tracking solutions.
Both the IS4 and EyeChip are now available for OEM pre-order.
