What They Say
At Siggraph 2021, Tobii, the gaze specialist, introduced a a lightweight foveation codec for VR/AR/MR according to the VRAR Association, The codec performs image pre-reduction that can give a 5:1 reduction of content with ‘no visible artefacts’. The graphic content can then be processed with a regular codec. The firm claims that this approach can be implemented on current architectures improving visual quality and compression over static foveation. Tobii is working with Nvidia.
What We Think
A 5:1 compression ratio is useful improvement when there is so much work going on to try to get to wireless connectivity for headsets. (BR)
