What They Say
We have reported on Vrgineers and their high quality VR headsets and Chris tried the previous QuadHD version at CES in 2019. (VR I Didn’t See at CES) At CES this year, the firm said that it showed a new version, the Xtal 3, still with a claimed FOV of 180° horizontally and 90° vertically but now with dual UltraHD displays and cameras. The headset is intended for professional applications such as flight simulation.
The firm said that it has significantly reduced the weight of the unit and equipped the Xtal with proprietary inside-out tracking. This uses a pair of fast-switching infrared cameras positioned on the lower edge under the central cover. The Xtal 3 currently supports inside- out tracking, Optitrack, ART Tracking and Vicon. Vrgineers plans to integrate Lighthouse tracking later this year.
What We Think
Vrgineers is aiming at the same kind of market as Varjo and, presumably, Apple. Over the holiday, DSCC said that it expects the widely anticipated Apple headset to use three OLED displays and thinks they might be used like the Varjo system, with two displays optimised for the foveal imaging with high resolution while the third shows an overall image of lower resolution. That’s potentially more complex than what Vrgineeers is doing. (BR)
