What They Say
The 8K Association (8KA) has published an interview with Marek Maciejewski of TCL Europe that includes details of the firm’s latest 8K TVs that were originally announced at CES (TCL: Details on the 8K QLED TV with miniLED backlight).
Pricing has been set as:
- €2,999 for the new 65?
- €3,999 for 75?
- €9,999 for OD Zero 85? flagship
The article has an interesting reminder that the exemption for 8K from the standard European maximum TV power consumption runs out in March 2023. TCL confirmed that to the 8KA that it expected to be able to meet the regulations by then, although the legal change might make it difficult for smaller sets as the regulation relates consumption to display size.
Maciejewski told the 8KA that it expects 250K 8K sets to be sold in Europe this year and 1.5 million sets (of 4K & 8K) of 75″ and over by that time.
What We Think
I had forgotten that the exemption for 8K sets would go away in 2023. That is going to be driving lots of work to improve the efficiency of smaller 8K sets in the backlights and LEDs as well as by possibly improving the aperture ratio of the LCD panels, although a breakthrough there doesn’t seem likely to me. Over the years, there have many radical proposals for improving LCD power efficiency, from frame sequential colour to QD colour filters, but none has really had much of an effect. (BR)
