What They Say
Digitimes Research reported that PC monitor shipments from Taiwan will be down sequentially by 8.2% in Q1 2021 to 25.69 million, while increasing 27.4% year on year. Larger sizes increased with 23.X and 27″ increasing and 22″ and above now above 75% (as they were last quarter).
Wistron is said to have benefited from orders by Dell and Lenovo in Q4 2020, as has Foxconn and those two makers were the top suppliers in that period. Wistron is expected to be almost flat in Q1, with other makers dropping in line with the market.
What We Think
These numbers are not unexpected. I meant to comment last week on reports that China has set out its 15 year plan and it includes a high speed railway and expressway from Beijing in China to Taipei. That seems unlikely at the moment, given that the government of Tsai Ing-Wen is keen on Taiwan’s independence and is in a strong position at the moment after a good reaction to the pandemic and strong economic growth in the last year. The Chinese government doesn’t want to work with the government because of its independence views. President Biden has continued the Trump administration support for Taiwan. (BR)
