Synaptics Wins Top Five OEM for ‘Infinity Displays’

synapticsSynaptics has launched a new optical fingerprint sensor that can be installed underneath an OLED to allow unlocking of mobile devices while also allowing full screen displays. The company said that the sensor can be placed anywhere under the display, which will need to be used to direct the user to the right area. Unlocking is said to be possible in 7 milliseconds and is claimed to be twice as fast as 3D facial recognition.

The sensor can be used with rigid or flexible OLEDs and can be used under water or when displays have screen protectors.

The sensor is available with SentryPoint technology, offering OEMs a wide-range of secure authentication features including: Quantum Matcher for adaptive fingerprint template matching and authentication; PurePrint anti-spoof technology to examine fingerprint images using artificial intelligence technology to distinguish between spoofs and actual fingers; and SecureLink which combines support for TLS protocol with ECC authentication and AES encryption.

Consumers prefer fingerprint authentication on the front of the phone, and with the industry quickly shifting to bezel-free OLED infinity displays, the natural placement of the fingerprint sensor is in the display itself,”

said Kevin Barber, senior VP and general manager, Mobile Division, Synaptics.

The company said that the sensor is being integrated by a ‘top 5’ smartphone OEM.

Separately, the company said that it has developed two new OLED display drivers for the support of displays up to 20:9 aspect ratio. Features include smooth dimming, sub-pixel rendering and variable gamma control as well as DeMura compensation. There are versions for flexible and rigid displays.
