JDI Adds New Display For VR

Japan Display Inc (JDI) has developed a new 3.6″ LTPS IPS LCD with 803 ppi and supporting 1920 x 2160 resolution at up to 90Hz. The display has a brightness of 150 cd/m² and response time of 4.5ms (grey to grey – worst case). Contrast is 700:1 (typical). The display is intended for VR applications.

The company also said that it plans to go above 1,000 ppi next year.

Analyst Comment

This display should help to reduce the effects of the ‘screen door’ effect. Google said at the SID that it is pushing for significantly higher pixel counts (KN2 Google Makes AR/VR Display Breakthroughs) with up to 20 megapixels per eye- five times the number in this display. (BR)
