SymbolShifters was claiming a new method of connecting traditional TV broadcasts to digital devices, and was seeking partners to commercialise the technology.
Briefly, SymbolShifters’ method embeds a scannable code – which can be invisible to the consumer – into the video stream. Data linked to the icon is automatically recorded and stored locally, making the consumer free to access it at any time. Information could include localised offers, digital brochures and URLs. It could also trigger actions, such as a ‘Like’ or Facebook or adding an item to an online shopping cart. Set-up analytics, to record viewer behaviour, is also enabled.
A ‘minor’ hardware confuguration will be required at the consumer end to take advantage of the technology – which could take the form of a dongle, app or set-top box software download.
