What They Say
SsimWave has been granted a US patent for image and video banding detection. The patent describes the method by which the firm’s products and metric address banding effects in an image or video, including:
- Assessing content for banding impairments;
- Determining the significance and location of the impairment;
- Detecting the banding pixels;
- Creating a banding map; and
- Determining the intensity level of each of the banding pixels.
What We Think
This is interesting. SsimWave specialises in trying to create metrics for video quality – an enterprise I applaud. I wonder to what extent its technology could be used in sets to correct visible banding? Or are TV processor makers already licensing its technology? The firm will be at IBC and I might get a chance to ask them, although my time at the show is going to be very limited this year. (BR)
