Sonos has announced a Playbase that is a flat sound box that is designed to sit underneath a TV. The company has been developing the base since 2013 and is 58mm (2.28″) high, 72cm wide and 38cm deep and weighs 8.6 kg (18.85 lbs). It includes six mid-range drivers, three tweeters and a woofer that delivers audio through a curling tuned port that the firm calls the S-tube (and which is also said to passively cool the box). It can also connect wirelessly to a sub-woofer. As a Sonos product, it can stream audio from the network. Reviewers were impressed with the ‘huge sound’ and will cost $699 (€800 including tax) when it launches in early April.
The S-Tube is said to be longer than the Playbase and the company also said that all the perforations (all 43,000) on the base are individually drilled, with different diameters at different points on the box.
