Skymedia to Launch Glasses-free UHD 3DTV using Dimenco Technology

Glasses-free 3D technology developer Dimenco was at CES, but we did not get a chance to meet with them. The company has just signed a technology license agreement with Skymedia, the third largest TV manufacturer in Korea, to launch a Glasses-free 3DTV.

Dimenco adds an optical layer (Dimenco Clear View) to the LCD imaging panel to help direct different images to the left and right eyes.  In past demos, they have shown very good image quality in multi-view 3D mode, while also allowing for the display of 2D content as well.

The underlying panel will have a native resolution of UHD-4K, and in 3D mode it is likely to deliver about 1080p per eye. In 2D mode it also delivers 1920 x 1080, so there is a compromise to watch in 2D.

The products Skymedia will be offering range from a 50” to a 65” UHD Glasses-free 3DTV that can connect to 3D Blu-rays, 3D Internet content and play 3D games. Skymedia will produce its Glasses-free 3DTV at its factory located in Hongcheon and aims to have a cost premium of approximately 15% – 20% on top of its current UHD TV’s. Overall, Skymedia sales aim is to exceed sales of 300K units of 50”and 65” TVS for home use in 2015.
