What They Say
It took three days after I contacted them for Sky’s media department to get back to me with an answer to my question, “Can you confirm whether the Sky Glass TV has any tuners as there are none listed in the specification’. I wrote to Sky as I was writing my Display Daily last week, (When is a TV not a TV?) The firm did confirm that it had ‘a DTT tuner that can only be used for back-up use when disconnected from broadband’.
What We Think
So the Sky Glass is not a tuner-less TV after all. However, I imagine that it was only included with reluctance and I would assume that the DTT content and connection is not integrated into the main menu structure and EPG, given that the point of putting all the Sky Q technology into the set is to keep viewers using the Sky content service and, therefore, justifying the subscription cost.
I guess that Sky doesn’t include it in its consumer advertising as it wouldn’t want to draw attention to broadband failure as Sky is a significant supplier of UK broadband service.
