Sigmaintell of China released its forecast that automotive display panel shipments will reach 170 million this year (excluding the aftermarket). This is a boost of 12% from 2017, when the volume was around 150. The company also shared its estimate of market shares, which showed JDI as the largest supplier, although LG Display was the fastest growing supplier in the top group and which grew 21% year on year. JDI grew 12% and Innolux grew only by 3%. Sharp, on the other hand, was 0.3% down on 2016.
Chinese makers improved their position with Tianma increasing 44%. The firm sees BOE as a ‘dark horse’ – it has an aggressive strategy and was up 58% in 2017 with good strength in the central console application.
In the longer term, there will be more diversification in technology to LTPS and OLED displays.
