Shenzen Timewaying Technology Wins DCI Approval

What They Say

Shenzen Timewaying Technology has been granted DCI approval for its LA4K-20 display. The test used a Dolby Vision IMB and the system is the second from the firm to be approved, after the LA2K-10 system was given the OK in December 2021.

Timewaying is reported to be the largest 3D equipment supplier for the Chinese market, with more than 30,000 3D systems installed among 11,000 cinema sites across China.

What We Think

It’s good to see more options and competition in the LED cinema space, but the economic arguments for direct view LED in the current economic conditions for cinemas are going to be very difficult to make. Seldom has the cinema industry been in such desperate need of a ‘tent pole’ title like the forthcoming Avatar 2 movie. I recently read that there will be very many versions of this title, including 160 different language versions! Unsurprisingly, there will be a 3D version as well as native 4K and a 48fps version. It remains to be seen whether cinema-goers will have much choice or information about which version that they see.   (BR)
