Samsung Display and LG Display Expand Small- to Medium-Size AMOLED Panel Production

According to Digitimes Research, the combined annual capacity of the Samsung Display and LG Display in small/medium AMOLEDs is expected to reach 16,069 million m² in 2020, compared to the 5,067 m² capacity for last year.

Flexible AMOLED panels are used in curved-surface smartphones and demand is also expected to increase. Accordingly, both Samsung Display and LG Display are increasing production capacity on small- to medium-size flexible AMOLED panels. The combined annual production capacity of the two companies is expected to rise from 2,111 million square metres in 2016 to 11,784 million square metres in 2020.

For its flagship smartphones, Samsung Electronics has adopted AMOLED panels, and this year Apple is expected to launch a 5.8” OLED iPhone. In addition, both Samsung Electronics and Apple may adopt OLED panels for their tablets.
