South Korea’s top auto parts manufacturer, Hyundai Mobis, had a media day in Korea and shared its plans to initiate mass production of its industry-first rollable vehicle display within the next three years. At the Hyundai Mobis 2023 Media Tech Day, the company shared its strategic vision for the future of vehicle displays. Part of this vision is the rollable display for in-vehicle infotainment systems, which they unveiled in April.
The company is currently in talks with car manufacturers in the US and Europe to incorporate its rollable displays in luxury electric vehicles and autonomous cars. “We expect to see vehicles equipped with rollable displays within 3 years,” said Choi Jin-young, the company’s infotainment display division chief.
Beyond the rollable display, Hyundai Mobis also showcased its 34-inch curved swivel display and hologram AR-HUD technologies. In a bid to secure its position in the market, the firm intends to develop passenger interactive displays, quantum dot MiniLED displays, natural 3D displays, and MicroLED displays. These next-generation technologies offer high resolution and energy efficiency, key features sought by the industry. Hyundai Mobis is also focusing on the development of infotainment services such as games, sports, and OTT services. This initiative aligns with the transition of the automotive industry towards what the company calls software defined vehicles (SDVs).
According to Automotive News, the company currently ranks as the sixth largest auto parts supplier globally, behind Germany’s Bosch, Japan’s Denso, Germany’s ZF, Canada’s Magna International, and China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL). Hyundai Mobis plans to ramp up customer promotions this year, focusing on its next-generation display technology. The company has been steadily growing its order book for high value-added electronic products like AR HUDs and vehicle infotainment systems. This year, Hyundai Mobis has set an overseas sales target of $5.35 billion for its core auto parts division, with automotive display products contributing to a target of $1.83 billion in overseas orders for electric vehicles.
