Report: LG OLED TV at Korea Airport Exhibiting Signs of Burn-in

ZDNet has reported on an apparent burn-in issue with LG 2018 OLED TVs, spotted at Korea’s Incheon Airport’s Air Milers Lounge. At least one of the displays, installed only a matter of months ago, is reportedly exhibiting significant, visible signs of image retention.

The display in question was apparently showing departure information, primarily text-based content that changes regularly, apart from a thick white line near the top of the screen, which was retained by the display, creating a ghost image of the line, still visible when the display was then used to show other content.

According to the publication, 69 LG displays were installed at the airport in January — 29 in the airport’s lobby and the other 40 split across its four lounges. ZDNet reached out to LG but the company apparently declined to comment. It is unknown whether the issue is specific to this display, the model (which was either not known or not specified by the publication) or perhaps the batch, or if it may be part of a wider issue affecting 2018 models.

Analyst Comment

I remain unconvinced about the use of OLED in commercial applications. Although LG is getting plenty of interest in the technology at shows, there have been few big installations that we can see, outside a couple of global installations. However, they are reported to have problems. There are plenty of reports on consumer bulletin boards of burn in that is denied as being covered by warranties by LG and Sony. That’s not a good sign (pun intended!). (BR)
