Report: Analogue-to-Digital Switchover in Germany “Is Progressing”

The analogue cable network shutdown in Germany is progressing, according to GfU. The shutdown moves into its next phase after the World Cup concludes in mid-July. Following pilot projects that took place in the spring, many cable network operators will make the complete switch to digital signal transmission in the summer.

Viewers will be informed of the changeover date at least three weeks beforehand. Just under 3.1 million of the country’s 17.6 million households still use analogue cable TV. For these households, the conversion will mean the purchase of new receivers. Channels will be re-sorted, so a new channel search will be required for all viewers.

Also affected by the analogue-to-digital conversion will be radio listeners who use their cable service for radio reception. Many operators will stop using analogue cable across their entire network, including analogue radio broadcasts.
