Quirk Logic Improves IQ and Software

QuirkLogic showed us its E Ink-based interactive display system (now called the Quilla) at last year’s Infocomm (we were the first press to see it). Now the system is starting to ship and one of the messages that the company was keen to emphasise was that there are a lot more vertical applications than it had thought off. The display is reckoned to be ‘the largest portable screen with a battery’ (we think we have seen bigger ones, but they are trolley based because of the large batteries). An application where this is useful is in tactical communications for sport – a board can be carried to pitch side or used in a training room, with notes being added anywhere. The company has also found an application in jury rooms, where the fact that all the notes on the screen are automatically stored in the cloud means that, unlike paper screens, the notes do not need to be transcribed – an expensive and time-consuming process.

The company has also developed the software. Last year, it showed how multiple pages could be shown on a single display, but now there is a mode where multiple pages are shown across multiple devices. Adding a new page on one end scrolls the pages along. The company has also worked on the echoing of content from one display to another via the cloud. There is also a ‘tear off’ mode, where pages can be moved by Wi-fi, bluetooth and NFC.

Touch performance and the impact of the touch system on the visual performance has also been reduced, so the screen looks better than it did last year. The driving scheme has also been improved to give better contrast. Mass production is starting in July and the company was using Infocomm to get feedback before deciding the final pricing.
