What They Say
In his ‘Power On’ subscription newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said that Apple’s first headset will be out next year and will support ‘mixed reality’ that is to say a VR experience with some kind of video passthrough to input surroundings. The headset is intended to ‘handle games in high-quality virtual reality with snappy chips and high-end displays’. He sees as an Apple AR headset as ‘years down the road’.
Gurman is also positive about the potential for the next headset after the Oculus Quest 2 with better optics and ‘a bevy of new sensors’.
What We Think
That Apple might be some way away from an AR headset is not surprising. The technology is still relatively immature and Apple’s success has been in waiting until everything is right before jumping into a market. The iPad was nowhere near the first tablet, but was the first to avoid several of the technology challenges, such as power consumption and weight, that had dogged previous versions. (BR)
