Portrait Displays’ Calman color calibration solutions are well known in the TV and monitor industry. The company is a pioneer in the industry. With the advent of HDR and 4K screens, the role of color calibration is important to both consumers and professionals so that they can enjoy their screens with very low color errors. Calman is widely used in places like Hollywood studios, but getting it into the hands of consumers is tricky.
The audio industry solved this problem when 5.1 sound became popular by supplying a microphone and built-in calibration/balancing software in the amplifier. Portrait Displays and MediaTek are taking a page out of the Audio suppliers game book and doing the same thing. Initially high-end TVs were available with a color calibrator, MediaTek will push that capability into the mass market.
Portrait say they and MediaTek are driving the democratization of color calibration. Whether a home enthusiast, a professional calibrator, or a retailer providing Calibration as a Service (CaaS), ready access to the Calman system will make it easier to learn calibration, perform calibration, and sell calibration.
Color calibration, like audio balancing is something you must experience to appreciate. Sadly we humans are adaptable and if we are getting crappy color, or sound, our amazing brains will try and compensate for it. But once it’s set up correctly its like getting new prescriptions glasses – holy cow, things look great!
This tech probably won’t show up in the retail channel until later this year.
