Plasmonic enhancement of stability and brightness in organic light-emitting devices

What They Say

Nature published a paper by scientists (from UDC) that reported that they have demonstrated an OLED that uses the decay rate enhancement of a plasmonic system to increase device stability (a doubling of operational stability) while extracting 16% of the energy from the plasmon mode as light. A nanoparticle-based out-coupling scheme extracts energy from the plasmon mode. The technique is not material specific and is said to be applicable to all current displays.

What We Think

The ageing problem of OLEDs has been one of the key challenges. To double stability is a big deal and to also increase brightness brings a double benefit. Because the technique was developed by UDC, who are very conservative in announcing developments, it is likely to be rolled out relatively quickly as there is nobody that knows more about the OLED supply chain. We’re planning to bring a more detailed look at this topic. (BR)
