What They Say
Pimax has announced a new ‘Reality 12K QLED’ headset for VR applications. The headset is built around 2 x 5.5″ miniLED QLED LCDs with 1200ppi and a claimed refresh rate of 200Hz. Horizontal field of view is said to be 200° and vertical is 135°. Other features include Tobii-enabled eye tracking and motorised ipd adjustment. Like the Varjo headset we reported recently, it uses aspheric lens elements, but in this case combine with fresnel lenses for the wider view. The main processor is a Qualcomm XR2 and it can work alone, but it works best with a PC and connections include a PC fibre optic cable as well as Wi-Fi 6 and an optional 60GHz WiGig wireless module.
There are lots of cameras. There are 4 for the 6 DOF tracking and hand tracking. There are dual cameras for the eye tracking, two more for face tracking and 3 for lip and full body tracking.
Although announced now, the headset will not be here until Q4 2022 and is expected to costs $2,399. If you buy a Pimax headset between now and then, you can get your money back when buying the 12K QLED.
What We Think
Interestingly, there was no quote of the weight of this unit. I’m not surprised, it might be a bit of a fright! Having said that, Toms Hardware reported that it is ‘lighter than previous models’. I have tried previous Pimax headsets and found that the approach, while giving good image quality, was not very comfortable. (BR)
